Sunday 19th December

A female Scaup flew past the seawall early morning, the first of the year, also offshore 34 Great-crested Grebe, four Great Northern and two Red-throated Diver, 14 Guillemot, seven Razorbill and six Common Scoter.

The two Black-necked Grebe were in the estuary just off Cockwood Steps with a single Little Grebe, five Red-breasted Merganser and a female Goldeneye. Also in the estuary 575 Wigeon, a high December count, possibly due to the lack of flood water on the marshes at the north end of the estuary, 106 Shelduck, 80 Common and an adult Mediterranean Gull, four Greenshank, three Shoveler and a Pale-bellied Brent Goose.

Elsewhere three Siberian Chiffchaff and three Chiffchaff were in the bushes; three Shoveler were on the Main Pond, Water Rail were squealing from the Saltmarsh and Main Pond and a year high of 527 Dark-bellied Brent Goose feeding on the beach at low tide, perhaps a sign of reduced Eelgrass in the estuary.
