A summer plumaged Red-necked Grebe offshore early evening was an unexpected highlight, just the third May record after birds in late May 1987 & 1st May 2010. 

Also offshore 50 Black-headed and two 2cy Mediterranean Gull, eight Manx Shearwater, five Sandwich Tern, two Great Northern Diver, two Common Scoter and single Eider, Great Crested Grebe and Red-breasted Merganser.

Elsewhere 12 Whimbrel, 10 Sanderling and nine Dunlin were in the estuary at low tide and four Red Kite and a Buzzard flew east, part of a movement of at least 29 kites, the majority offsite NE along Eastdon Ridge,

Other Wildlife: The first Southern Marsh Orchid of the year was in flower in the Back Meadow with several Azure Damselfly. Eight butterfly species were also on the wing including single BrimstoneHolly Blue and Red Admiral, the latter a migrant, along with a couple of Silver Y

The first successful mothing of the year saw a total of 129 individuals of 46 species recorded to light, including no less than five new species for the Recording Area. These were Brindled Beauty, Dark Spectacle, Lunar Marbled Brown, Red Chestnut and Water Carpet, the 813th-817th species for the Warren.

Also recorded six Great Prominent, Rivulet, Sandy Carpet, Goldspot and White-spotted Pug, the only migrants were five Diamond Back.
